What are the benefits of using training weapons?
A weapon is a force multiplier and an extension of the body of the wielder. A humble stick transforms into a substantial advantage when in the hands of a well-trained practitioner.
Training with weapons is difficult because we must learn to use them mentally in the same way as our own bodies. The advantages, however, are considerable:
Increased strength
Handling a weapon, even a light one, increases the load on our muscles and joints and helps them strengthen.
Greater speed
Speed is a combination of core stability, tendon strength, body positioning and muscle fiber composition. A weapon helps us develop or improve all of these elements.
Better balance
The speed at which a weapon moves and the need to use the body to propel it requires us to develop better balance and awareness of body positioning.
A stronger core
Weapon handling requires the two halves of the body (lower and upper) to work in close coordination. This helps strengthen the core, as the different muscle groups begin to move together fluidly.
Better coordination
Because wielding a weapon increases the overall amount of force applied to the body, it requires better coordination between the hands and eyes.
Better endurance
Weapons training is not just about strength, it requires a sustained number of movements performed convincingly. This requires muscles capable of functioning without failure for a longer period than if they functioned without a weapon.
Better mental agility
The mind is the greatest weapon. The ability to create complex mental models of what we do and how we do it, then adjust them on the fly, requires mental computing power that few people can manage. Weapons training becomes intense mental training the moment you pick up a weapon and start swinging it.
Weapons training has a lot to offer. It can develop your skills at an increased rate and mentally prepare you to survive a threat. However, weapons training is not enough for self-defense. You also need empty-handed training.
With the right approach to weapons training, you will be able to develop both your weapons skills and your strength skills. With this approach, your skills will overlap and you will have a more effective approach to learning and developing techniques. For example, Filipino martial arts have a well-established training method that incorporates both weapons and unarmed techniques. They also include disarmament and retention of weapons. Whatever system you use for your own training, find one that incorporates weapons and unarmed training consistently and effectively.
