This 180 x 90 cm straw mat is used to perform the traditional Japanese cutting test with a samurai sword (mainly katana or wakizashi).

The traditional art of Tameshigiri , which was practiced in Japan both to test the effectiveness and sharpness of swords and to demonstrate the skill of sword testers and swordsmen, is still very popular today. With a sharpened sword, a wide variety of cuts and cutting techniques can be practiced with one or two hands on Omote mats. The quality of the blade and the skill of the person performing it can be recognized by the cut surface of the carpet.

We offer you this omote tatami mat woven from simple but sturdy quality straw, can be easily cut, they meet the requirements of a sword tester.

Preparing the test cuts: Rolled up the mat and tightened it as much as possible, tied it up and soaked it in water for a few hours to swell. You must then allow the soaked roller (placed vertically) to dry completely. Through this process, the density or strength needed for cutting exercises is achieved. The finished wrapped mat can now be mounted on a Tameshigiri stand and used.

In addition to their use as martial arts accessories, the Tatami-Omote offered here can of course also be "diverted" and used, for example, as floor covering, panel, cover or simply for decoration (in the house, the garden or even during Asian events).

Please note that straw is a natural product and color deviations are quite common. The hue can vary from greenish to yellowish or brownish and lightens over time due to the normal aging process of straw. Direct sunlight accelerates this natural fading.
