For shooting near or far, the folding eyecup has two options

1. Large tunnel allowing shooting from 0 to 100 meters or for night shooting.
2. Narrow tunnel allowing shooting from 50 to more than 600 meters depending on the capabilities of your weapon.

The carrying handle with adjustable eyecup on its A2 picatinny type support is still used to this day on AR-15 M4 weapons of the regulatory forces of the US Army.
