Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore, similar to Western demons or trolls. In modern culture, they are beginning to move away from this menacing connotation to take on the role of guardian or protector, similar in nature to gargoyles. Their power and ferocity, however, have not diminished.
The Japanese saying that translates to "Oni with an iron club" or "being of invincible nature" fits perfectly with the L6/Bainite blade of the Hanwei Oni Katana. The blade geometry allows for exceptional cutting capabilities. The Tsuka of the sword is wrapped in black ray skin and silk, while the Koshirae feature Oni designs in different classic styles. The result is a unique combination of folklore and functionality.
Bainite is a high carbon steel structure that combines high strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. It has been known as an exemplary component of Katana blades for a number of years, but its use has been limited to a few high-level master swordsmiths due to the difficulties encountered in performing the exact heat treatment procedures necessary to produce Katana blades. A bainite blade body in combination with the very hard martensite Yakiba (cutting edge section) required for Katana blades.
Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process, using L-6 tool steel billets (a very strong, high-carbon, low-alloy steel) as the starting point for this katana. The blades are forged and shaped in the traditional manner, then carefully heat treated to achieve the required bainite and martensite structures before final polishing.
