Mammen Ax
The axe, inherited from the wars of the Franks against the Romans, has remained a widely represented Viking weapon over the ages.
The Viking Mammen ax also demonstrated Scandinavian genius in steel manufacturing and working.
Smaller axes are sized to be worn through a belt, to serve as a backup weapon, and being usable with one hand, they were used in combination with a shield. The Mammen axe, is one of the best known and best decorated examples of a small Viking throwing axe.
It's a perfect example of the Vikings' blend of art and warfare.
Excavated from a famous 10th-century burial mound near Mammen, Denmark, the original is decorated with silver-inlaid engravings in the Jelling style . It is now on display at the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen.
This ax is a true tribute to the creative and martial side of this dynamic and influential culture.
