The term bearded ax refers to the blade style of various axes used from the 6th century AD.
Most often associated with the Scandinavians of the Viking Age. The hook or "beard", i.e. the lower part of the ax blade, provides a large cutting surface while keeping the overall weight of the ax low.
The hook, or "beard" of the ax would also have been useful in combat, for latching onto objects, such as shields or weapons, to remove them from the defender's grasp.
Additionally, this design allows the user to grip the handle directly behind the head for planing or shaving wood.
Their ax heads are forged and the edges hardened, made to resist impacts .
More modern variations of this type of bearded ax are still used today by carpenters and some foresters.
