History of the dagger

This dagger was first seen in the hands of the assassin who was sent to kill Bran Stark. Initially associated with Petyr Baelish, and later Tyrion Lannister, the dagger was used by Catelyn Stark as evidence to indict and arrest Tyrion for attempting to murder her son. This started the war between the Starks and the Lannisters. She was later seen in a story about the Targaryen family that Samwell Tarly read in the citadel.

The knife remained in Petyr Baelish's possession for some time. After traveling to Winterfell with the Knights of Green Valley, he gave it to Bran Stark as a gesture of goodwill since the knife was so close to the end of his life. Bran had no use for a weapon and so passed it on to his sister Arya.

Arya integrated the knife fighting style into her normal fighting style and ended up using the knife to attack - SPOILER ALERT!!! - the Night King. Driving the Valyrian steel blade into the Night King's torso, the power of the blade shattered the Night King, and with his death, all the other White Walkers and their army of fighters died from the magic that had linked them to their Creator. Thus ended the war against the dead.
