Jade Lion Gim Sword - Cold Steel

The concept of the lion as guardian originated in China over 1800 years ago, during the Han dynasty. The lion, fierce, courageous, loyal and agile, was the perfect symbol of protection of home and hearth. It had both a symbolic meaning and a decorative function: elegant statues of guardian lions were often placed in front of the homes of the rich and noble, and even in front of the imperial palace gates and the tombs of Chinese emperors.

The Jade Lion series from Cold Steels® is very popular with collectors and fans of Chinese martial arts. The blades in the collection are hand forged from high quality Damascus steel and expertly tempered. With their sophisticated pattern, they are not only sharp but also beautiful. The guard and pommel are cast in nickel silver and decorated with the Chinese vigilant lion motif. They contrast strongly with the elegant jade green cord of the hilt and with the rosewood scabbard, which is wrapped in appropriately colored ray skin (Samé).

The Jade Lion Gim is a Wen Jian (scholar's sword). In internal tests, it was able to cut and pierce 10 cm thick bamboo sticks with a single blow.

Damask steel

The term Damascus steel refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name is derived from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered the ancient stronghold and origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a hard, high-carbon steel and a soft, low-carbon steel are joined together by fire welding and repeated bending. Carbon-rich steel ensures greater hardness, better hardenability and longer sharpness retention, while softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and greater resistance to breakage. Thanks to this technology, which appeared at a time when steel qualities were poor and changeable, you can combine the positive properties of different steels. Thanks to the different colors with varying carbon content, impressive patterns are created by alternating layers. It is in particular because of these motifs that the Damascus blades of the Middle Ages were attributed with magic.
