Edward of Woodstock (1330-1376), known as the Black Prince, was the eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainaut and the father of King Richard II of England. He was the first Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Wales and Prince of Aquitaine. In his young life he was named Edward of Woodstock, after his birthplace, and he has been popularly known as the "Black Prince" since the 16th century. He was an exceptional military leader, and his victories over the French at the battles of Crécy and Poitiers made him very popular during his lifetime.
In 1348, he became the first knight of the Order of the Garter, which he had co-founded. Edward died a year before his father and became the first English Prince of Wales not to become King of England. On the death of Edward III, the throne passed to his son Richard II, a minor. The Black Prince: The origin of the name is uncertain, whether it comes from Edward's black shield and/or his black armor, or whether it comes from Edward's brutal reputation, particularly against the French in Aquitaine . However, there is no conclusive evidence that Edward ever wore black armor.
