Any self-respecting Viking tribal leader was an expert in the use of sword, shield, spear and ax, if not a respected and undisputed expert. As these long, heavy and often cumbersome weapons were not always within reach, Vikings almost always carried a large seax knife with them. Generally, the seax was attached to the front or back of the belt (just where there was room so as not to interfere with the carrying of other weapons) and was immediately at hand in case of emergency. sudden attack. Modern before its time

Although most seax knives have the Cold Steels® Woodsman's Sax (ref. 88HUA) profile (with a straight edge and a convex blade spine angled toward the tip), other variations, such as the Chieftan's Sax with a blade type Bowie as featured here, were also very popular.

Blade

The blade of the Chieftan's Sax was forged from truck shock absorber carbon steel, hardened and satin finished. It has a so-called broken-back profile, where the straight back of the blade rises very slightly at first, then falls sharply towards the tip. In fact, its basic shape is no different from a Bowie clip blade, but it predates Bowie by centuries! As the Seax Knife is primarily designed as a weapon and only plays a secondary role as a tool, it is equipped with a discreet brass hand guard, which prevents fingers from ending up on the blade and offers some protection against enemy weapons.
But Cold Steel® is especially proud of the hand-carved handle, which is simply stunning with its elaborate braided relief pattern. With the brass guard and pommel, the result is a harmonious overall picture.

Historically accurate

Each Seax comes with a sturdy, historically accurate replica of the scabbard in brown leather with brass fittings, side seam with leather lacing and stylish leather carrying straps.

1055 carbon steel

The carbon content and relatively low proportions of other substances in this steel make it a very stable and strong material like most high carbon steels. This steel is ideal for blades that must have high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed knives, machetes and swords.
