Today, Cold Steel is proud to add a "little brother" to its range. A shorter, lighter model they simply named the Blackthorn Shillelagh. Inspired by an antique club from Lynn C. Thompson's private collection, the Blackthorn Shillelagh mimics the look, feel and balance of the original, but is made of high-impact polymer that will withstand the conditions the most difficult climates.

With a beautiful faux wood texture resembling bark, raised thorns on the handle and a highly polished faux wood head, this stick will make an impression! whether carried under the arm during a pageant or simply hung by the door to welcome unwanted guests.

The blackthorn cane, the Shillelagh: designed for more than just walking

Elegant walking sticks made from blackthorn, also known as Blackthorn in English. The blackthorn is a large tree that grows in the British Isles. Its twisted, thorny, dark-colored branches have been used for defense, called Shillelaghs, for centuries. Plum is a very resilient wood that naturally resists warping, making it a perfect material for making a fighting stick.

The Irish fighting stick of choice was made from oak, blackthorn, ash or holly and was known as a bata, which means fighting stick in Gaelic. The bata's growing popularity is believed to be due to the times when the Irish and Scottish were not allowed to legally carry fighting sticks for self-defense. Men began training with their bata from a young age, and receiving one was considered a rite of passage into adulthood.

The term Shillelagh, comes from Shillelagh Forest in County Wicklow. They were traditionally prepared by coating the stick with fat or peat flour and placing it in the chimney to harden. We left the bark for greater strength and sanded the handle.

Folklorist Padraic Colum said that the "Shillelagh should not be seen as a symbol of Ireland, but as a sign of honor for those who wore it."
