It was originally created as a sturdy fighting stick, for self-defense when weapons were not permitted. It has evolved into a sturdy, lightweight walking stick and symbol of distinction . Made in County Roscommon, Ireland. Often considered a symbol of Irishness, the Shillelagh is traditionally kept behind the bar in Irish taverns.
