A question that many ask, how to sharpen your machete?
So, are you familiar with a machete? The machete is in fact one of the most used blades in the world. With its popularity, it is a great advantage for you if you own one. But do you know how to sharpen a machete? Yes, sharpening a machete is important and therefore it should be done in the right way.
Sharpen a machete with a stone or rock
The stone can be natural or artificial and is used to “sharpen” or sharpen the machete. It is called wet stone, whetstone or water stone. Wet stones and water stones are a type of sharpening stones, which can also be other sharpening stones, such as diamond stones or oil stones.
Artificial stones for sharpening have a more precise grain size, but they disintegrate easily compared to natural stones.
Once you have the right stone, you need water and a spouted container. This is a traditional sharpening method, therefore simple, easy and cheap. To sharpen the blade, you need to move it from base to tip against the stone, holding it perpendicular to it. It requires a little effort and time, but this sharpening method can be practiced anywhere and anytime.
How to sharpen a machete with a file
First of all, you need to start by having a good machete. Although a cheap machete can do the job, we highly recommend getting a good quality machete. It will last longer and be more useful to you. You can sharpen it using a file or awl. If you use a file, make sure it is not the roughest or smoothest type, but rather the intermediate type called a "bastard" file. Then secure the machete in a vice in a stable position and at the correct angle. Push the mill file as many times as necessary onto the blade. Remember to push and not pull the file, as the teeth are angled forward. If you find it easier, you can clamp the file in the vice and slide the blade over it. If you're outside, you can stick the machete into a tree to hold it steady while you use the file to sharpen it.
When you're done with one side of the blade, turn the machete over and sharpen the other side, unless you have a machete that only has the blade sharpened on one side. Finally, using a soft cloth, remove all the thin strips of metal that were created during sharpening.
There it's done ! You now know the different techniques for sharpening a machete as well as the steps to follow. Indeed, the process of sharpening a machete is not that complicated if you are guided through the process.
